September means apple picking! After picking 90 pounds of apples we launched into making our favorite apple recipes! This one tops the list. Pretty much anything you can serve warm with ice cream is delicious! We used a variety of apples to add to the texture and flavor of the Apple Crisp. Its a family favorite!
Apple Crisp
Apple Filling:
8 medium apples, your favorite variety, peeled, sliced
3 Tablespoons butter, melted
2 Tablespoons flour
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
3 Tablespoons milk
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
pinch of salt
Crumb Topping
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt
1/3 cup cold butter, diced.
Combine topping ingredients in a medium bowl and mix with a pastry cutter until small crumbs form. Set aside.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees
In a medium bowl using a whisk, combine the melted butter and flour. Add lemon juice, milk, and vanilla. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Mixture will be thick. Pour this mixture over the sliced apples and toss to coat in a large bowl. Pour apple mixture into an 8×8 baking dish. Sprinkle crumb topping over the apples. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving warm with vanilla ice cream. For extra deliciousness, top with homemade caramel sauce 🙂
If you are worried about the apple juices bubbling over, place the 8×8 dish on a foil lined baking sheet to reduce spills.
