As a new mom I was afraid of yeast recipes….funny, right? This is the recipe that launched me into confident bread-making. This French Bread is so easy yet so delicious. Wherever I take it, I am asked for the recipe. Once you try it, it will be your favorite go-to bread recipe!!
Our Famous French Bread
Yield: 2 loaves
Total time: 2 hours
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups warm water
2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
1 Tablespoon yeast
3 Tablespoons cooking oil
1 Tablespoon salt
6 cups flour
**1 egg for brushing
Directions:
- In a stand mixer, or your bread mixer, dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast. When the yeast bubbles, add the oil, 3 cups of flour and salt. Mix. Add the remaining 3 cups of flour. Knead dough for 10 minutes. The dough should be stiff, not sticky. Add flour if needed.
- Let dough rise for 1 hour. During this hour, punch down every 15 minutes.
- Shape dough into 2 long loaves. Place on a greased baking sheet. Slit the tops with a sharp knife.
- Beat an egg and brush on the tops of the loaves. Let rise for 20-30 minutes.
- Heat oven to 400 degrees and bake for 25-30 minutes
